Helping hand needed for law students

    Published in: Legalbrief Today
    Date: Fri 14 September 2012
    Category: General
    Issue No: 3121

A students organisation dedicated to protecting human rights, preventing discrimination and promoting social justice and the rule of law, and backed by Juta, the Claude Leon Foundation, Section27, the Open Society Foundation, CALS, Eversheds and Bell Dewar among others, is looking for additional assistance in funding its annual seminar which brings together students from across the country to engage with legal activists, academics, leaders of the Bench, civil society members and others.

Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ) is a society formed in partnership between students from various SA universities and aims to transform legal education and access to justice. The SLSJ has won the support of Advocate Geoff Budlender, who said it 'provides hope that we will achieve a legal system and a legal profession which are more responsive to the needs of ordinary people', and former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson, who praises the students for 'taking a leadership role in advancing constitutionalism among a new generation of aspirant lawyers who did not live under apartheid'.

This year's seminar, scheduled for 21-24 September at Habonim Campsite, Onrus, Western Cape, is being organised by students from Stellenbosch, UCT and UWC. It will be held under the theme, Cross-examining our Constitutional Democracy: Does Your Vote Really Count?, and has attracted a number of highly-respected speakers. Among many other subjects, the role of the judiciary in transforming society, the relationship between judicial activism and judicial deference, and the powers of the President contrasted with those of the Constitutional Court, as well as the review of the Constitution will come under the microscope. An impressive list of speakers is headed by such legal luminaries as Chaskalson; Justice Edwin Cameron and Kate O'Regan, of the Constitutional Court; Judge Dennis Davis; Roelf Meyer, chief negotiator for the National Party at the Kempton Park talks; Advocates Budlender, Wim Trengove, Paul Hoffman and Gcina Malindi (President Zuma's personal advocate, who argued 'The Spear' case); Enver Daniels, the Chief State Law Adviser, and various academics. If you are able to assist with funding, wish to attend or require any further information contact Quintin Combrink (seminar co-ordinator) at 072 242 8687 or slsj.seminar2012@gmail.com or qtcombrink@gmail.com .
